Google Cloud savings checks
Google Cloud opportunities in Cost Savings come from two sources: Google's own Recommender, which you export to BigQuery, and CloudYali's own rules. Both run once a day.
Google Recommender
CloudYali reads Google's cost recommendations from the recommendations_export table in your billing
export dataset. Set up the export first: Google Cloud recommendations.
CloudYali keeps recommendations whose main impact is cost, and drops one that Google has not refreshed
for 72 hours.
The amount is the size of Google's projected cost change, in the currency Google reports. CloudYali does not convert it to a monthly figure, and an amount in a currency other than USD shows as Unconverted.
| Recommender | Category |
|---|---|
| VM machine type | Rightsizing |
| Idle VM | Wastage |
| Idle persistent disk | Wastage |
| Idle image | Wastage |
| Idle IP address | Wastage |
| Committed use discounts | Commitment |
Every other cost recommender, such as Cloud SQL, BigQuery or Cloud Storage, appears under Other. It has no savings bucket, so it cannot be marked implemented yet.
CloudYali's rules
CloudYali's rules price findings from Google's list prices, or from your billing export where it has the resource's cost.
| Rule | Detects | Monthly savings |
|---|---|---|
| GCP-GCE-01 | A VM stopped for 30 days or more that still pays for disks and static IPs | The remaining disk and IP cost |
| GCP-GCE-02 | A VM on an older series or an oversized predefined shape | The price difference to the better machine type |
| GCP-GCE-03 | An idle GPU, or an unused local SSD on a running VM | The GPU or local SSD cost |
| GCP-GCE-04 | An underfilled or empty sole-tenant node group | The cost of the nodes it can release |
| GCP-GCE-05 | A non-production VM with no schedule that could stop out of hours | The cost of the hours it could stop |
| GCP-GCE-06 | A fault-tolerant on-demand VM or Vertex job that fits Spot | The difference to Spot pricing |
| GCP-PD-01 | An orphaned snapshot older than 30 days, or a manual one older than 90 | Its storage at $0.026 per GiB |
| GCP-PD-02 | A regional disk on a non-production workload with no HA or DR label | Half the disk's cost |
| GCP-SQL-01 | A non-production Cloud SQL instance with high availability or Enterprise Plus | The premium for HA and the edition |
| GCP-SQL-02 | A non-production Cloud SQL instance that keeps more than 7 backups | No amount |
| GCP-NET-05 | A forwarding rule with no backends, past the fifth free rule | $7.30 per rule |
| GCP-AR-01 | An Artifact Registry repository over 50 GiB with no cleanup policy | No amount |
| GCP-MEM-01 | A non-production Memorystore instance on Standard tier or with replicas | The difference to Basic tier |
| GCP-GKE-04 | A non-production Backup for GKE plan keeping backups more than 7 days | $9 per namespace |
| GCP-GKE-05 | A GKE version past standard support, or Cloud SQL in extended support | The extended support fee |
| GCP-BILL-01 | A billing export that is missing, out of date or not detailed | No amount |
| GCP-TPU-01 | A TPU node ready for 7 days or more with no queued work | No amount |
| GCP-CUD-02 | A commitment ending within 60 days without renewal | No amount |
Each rule's opportunity describes the change to make. Google Cloud opportunities show a general runbook in their details.
